It took me a while to notice but in this detailed pre-war picture of Smithford Street on Osmiroid's excellent Old Coventry City Centre website you can see that the wires have already been removed and the tramlines filled in:

I suspect the picture was taken around 1938/39

Trams were withdrawn from Smithford Street in 1932 because of congestion. The Earlsdon service ran via Gosford Green.

Yes, I did mean Greyfriars Green. Silly me!

I knew someone who delivered to Smithford Street when the trams were still running. He said that the trouble was that vans delivering in Smithford Street obstructed the trams and had to keep driving round the block every time a Tram came along.
